Abstract
We observed 87 cases of acute glomerulonephritis which were admitted to Kyungpook Na tional University Hospital, Department of Pediatrics, during the 5 year period from Aug. 1961 to Jul. 1966.
1) The incidence of acute glomerulonephritis was 6.1% of the total inpatients during the same period. A peak was reached in 1965 with a total of 21 cases that. Year, and a gradually increasing trend was seen year after year. The seasonal highest incidence occured in Oct. and Nov. and the next in Jan.
2) The disease proved to be prevalent in males than in females, the ratio was about 1.9:1. More cases were seen in older children after 7 years of age, the percentage was 73.6%.
3) The most common disease precedinrtteute, glomerulonephritis was upper respiratory infections which totaled 51:7%, and the others were predisposed impetigo, otitis media, measles, parotitis. The remaining 41.3% were of unknown etiology.
4) The most common clinical symptom was edema (70.6%), followed by hematuria and oliguria, Only 37.9% of the cases could be admitted within 5 days after the onset of the disease.
5) At the time of admission we found proteinuria, hematuria, and casts in urine in most of the cases, and mild anemia and leucocytosis and increased E. S. R. in a half, and we also observed more than 35mg/100ml of N. P. N. in 67.3% of the cases, and decreased serum albumin (lesser than 3.Ogm) in 44.2%.
6) In 50.7% of the cases we observed hypertension, and a large number of these cases showed cardiomegaly (46.4%), increased pulmonary markings(50%), and pleural reaction (38.5%))n X-ray findings and hepatomegaiy (25%).
7) Complications of the disease were observed in 5 cases of hypertensive encephalopathy, and one case of uremia, but we could not see heart failure in any of cases.
8) The rate of recovery was 79.2% (68 cases), and 57.4% of all cases were recovered in 3 weeks after admission, and 3 cages showed_ proteinuria and hematuria for more months, and one case affected by uremia was fatal.
